Jane St Vincent Welch (ASE) has been cheerfully editing a huge range of documentaries for almost 18 years, specializing in observational cinema verité and social documentaries.

She has been on the committee of the Australian Film Editors Guild for eight years and was president in 2000. Jane received her ASE accreditation for editing in 2006.

In 1997 she edited a documentary feature directed by her partner, Nick Torrens, entitled ‘To Get Rich is Glorious’, about a Hong Kong businessman, Vincent Lee, who needs to prove himself to China… and to his father. It screened at IDFA (Amsterdam); Sydney, Auckland, and Wellington Film Festivals, and on the ABC and BBC networks.

Jane then worked with the legendary Michael Rubbo on ‘Much Ado About Something’, exploring whether the works of Shakespeare were really written by Christopher Marlowe. The documentary won an AFI Award and screened at the New York and Montreal film festivals.

The sequel to ‘To Get Rich is Glorious’, entitled  ‘The Men Who Would Conquer China’, depicted Vincent  Lee’s collaboration with Mart Bakal, a New York banker. The “odd couple” bought up run-down state-owned Chinese companies, brought their brand of capitalism to China and pursued their fortune. The documentary won an AFI for Editing (2004), the Film Critics Circle of Australia Best Documentary award (2004), and the Sydney Film Festival’s Dendy Award (2005). It screened at the Chicago, Shanghai, Tri-Continental, INPUT, and New Zealand film festivals, among others.

‘The Burning Season’ is Jane’s first collaboration with Hatchling Productions.
