The Dayak people at Nyaru Menteng
Lone Droscher Nielsen’s orangutan rehabilitation centre is near Palangkaraya, Kalimantan. The name of the centre is ‘Nyaru Menteng’ (Place where lightning strikes). The main campus is known as Odom, named after Lone’s ex-husband, who is Dayak.
Today, most of Lone’s employees are from the Dayak community in the surrounding area. Over 40 local Dayak women work with Lone at the centre, caring for orangutans.
